I first learned about chocolate hummus from a co-worker and let me tell you, it has changed my life. When she told me about it, I knew I had to go home and make some for myself. I had never made homemade hummus before so I asked her what she puts in hers and she shared the ingredients with me. Instead of using nut butter or tahini in my recipe, I use peanut butter so it makes it extra creamy and delicious. Instead of using sugar, I use maple syrup to add the sweet flavor but while still allowing it to stay creamy and smooth. Chocolate hummus makes for the absolute PERFECT snack and I feel really good knowing that it also has some protein in there but it tastes so sweet and delicious. Here’s how to make it:

    Chocolate Hummus

    Ingredients for Chocolate Hummus

    • 1 (15 oz) can of chickpeas
    • ⅓ cup cocoa powder
    • ⅓ cup peanut butter
    • ⅓ cup maple syrup
    • ¼ cup milk
    • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

    Instructions for Chocolate Hummus

    Step 1: Preparing the Chickpeas

    1. Drain and Rinse: Open the can of chickpeas and drain them. Rinse the chickpeas thoroughly under running water.
    2. Remove Skins: Take the time to remove the skins from each individual chickpea. While this step is optional, it helps achieve a smoother texture for your hummus.

    Step 2: Blending the Ingredients

    1. Combine Ingredients: In a blender (this is the one I use), add the prepared chickpeas, cocoa powder, peanut butter, maple syrup, milk, and vanilla extract.
    2. Blend Until Smooth: Blend all the ingredients together until you achieve a smooth and creamy consistency. You may need to scrape down the sides of the blender occasionally to ensure everything is well incorporated.

    Step 3: Serve and Enjoy

    1. Transfer to Serving Dish: Once the chocolate hummus is smooth and creamy, transfer it to a serving dish or bowl.
    2. Pair with Dippables: Serve your chocolate hummus with an array of dippables such as fresh strawberries, pretzel crisps, raspberries, bananas, or any other favorite fruits or snacks.
